Scott Williams branded 'arrogant' for what he did at end of set vs Michael van Gerwen

Scott Williams has been branded "arrogant" for taunting Michael van Gerwen during their Paddy Power World Darts Championship quarter-final.

Away from all the hype around 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler, Williams has produced a tournament run that would be front and centre any other year. The world ranked No.52 before the start of the worlds took the scalps of Danny Noppert, Martin Schindler and Damon Heta on his way to the last eight, and can now add Van Gerwen to the list with a stunning 5-3 win.

Williams’ run set up a clash with Van Gerwen who had been one of the tournament’s in-form players throughout the early rounds. But the Dutchman didn’t get into his grove at all and a plethora of missed darts saw him whitewashed 3-0 in the opening set.

Van Gerwen’s blunt start, to the surprise of everyone and seemingly including Williams, led the 33-year-old to poke fun at his opponent. After the end of the first set, Williams celebrated towards his entourage before he made a dig towards MVG who had his back turned to the oche at the table.

Williams pointed with both arms towards Van Gerwen before making a zero sign with his fingers, digging out the fact that his current No.1 world-ranked opponent hadn’t got a leg on the board, before raising his arms and walking off stage.

And fans were not happy with Williams’ behaviour as his actions were dubbed “arrogant” by fans. Another comment read: “Playing to the crowd and getting in MVG’s head,” with a third saying: “Imagine doing this on live TV against one of the best,” while a fourth added: “Such a clown.”

Others, however, praised Williams for his character and claimed it was a sign of his confidence. Williams re-emerged from the break to feel the full force of MVG, who levelled the scores with an average of 116.71.

However, the Premier League champion couldn’t sustain his form and suffered a major drop off in the next sets as Williams shocked the Ally Pally crowd to win 5-3 and book his place in the semi-finals.
